Teamsters Local 853 starts its first womens committee!

On May 14, Local 853's women's committee was officiallly launched with a breakfast at Dick's Restaraunt in San Leandro. At the first meeting, spearheaded by Pam Gaskill from Rock Transport, the group agreed to plan two events: A community service day in July and an education forum in September.
We have voted on our community service  and decided on a building day with Habitat For Humanity. On July 23, a group of us will help build a 9- home " green " development, built using enviornmentally-sustainable materials and methods. This is so exciting and we are on our way to a great start for this new found committee. Pictures and an account of this day be coming so stay tuned. If you would like more info on this women's committee please feel free to contact me.         Stacy

International Brotherhood Of Teamsters 28th International Convention Las Vegas 2011

Vice President Joe Biden provided the closing address at the 28th annual International Brotherhood of Teamsters at the Paris Hotel on Friday July 1, 2011. Biden told Teamsters " you protect the middle class".
The Vice President, who is known for his straightforward style, didn't hide his feelings about the current labor union fights across the country. He believes they are under attack by his Republican rivals for no apparent reason.

Danny Devito also spoke to the roaring Teamsters on Thursday June 30. His message was great and his support for the Teamsters was strong. Devito told the crowd that" Ceo stands for, can eventually outsource". The crowd was on its feet with so many great speakers all week long! To read more go to Teamsters.org.

The whole week was exciting and productive as our own, Rome Aloise excepted his nomination for Vice President At Large on the Hoffa/Hall slate. Rome garnered an impressive 1,398 votes ( out of 1,629 ) putting him at the top of a 14 candidate list for just seven Vice Presidents At Large spots.

Barbara Boxer wins election!

Barbara Boxer over came several hurdles to defeat Carly Fiorina in Senate race.

Despite perennially weak approval ratings, a pro Republican political climate and her roughest campaign; she beat the former Hewlett Packard CEO 52% to 42.6%.

Among California voters casting a ballot in the Senate race, exit polls found that 24% described themselves as angry about the way the federal government is working. Another 22% said they were " satisfied " and 47% said they were " dissatisfied " but not angry with the last voters favoring Boxer over Fiorina by a 9 - point margin! Here are just a few of her accomplishments:

Senator Boxer supported the 2009 stimulis plan protecting and creating American jobs.

To keep jobs and investments at home, she called for ending the tax break that companies recieve for moving plants overseas.

She wrote the first - ever law to authorize federal funding for after school programs so that children have a safe place to go after school.

She was the first women to be elected by peers as chair of Board elected to house of representatives in 1982.

In 1992 elected to Senate history with Senator Diane Feinstein as the first time two women had been elected as Senators from one state.

Elected to a third Senate term in 2004; she recieved more than 6.9 million votes - the highest vote total for any senate Candidate in U.S. history.

Mission Foods rolls up employees in a Tortilla and eats them!!!

Mission Foods the nations largest Tortilla maker, is taking the rights away from its workers by threatening and intimidating them in to believing that should they continue to talk to the union they will be FIRED!
Its a tactic that almost all companys use during a campaign. What this does is puts the workers in a horrible place, as jobs are hard to find right now the worker is left feeling very intimidated into allowing Mission to keep them under their thumb.
The work force being 80% women is treated unfairly , wages are low, and respect and dignity is something they almost never see!
During these past weeks Frank and myself have visited the plant on a weekly basis to let the workers know that we are still here for them, but the mood is somber the employer has them right where he wants them Miserable, Afraid,Turning on eachother, and just hoping for a life line. Teamsters has what these workers need!
"We can offer them what they need", says Stacy one of the organizers who has been working with the employees for the last year and half, its just that they dont seem to want to fight any longer and we can not do it with out them.

Stacys chicken recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 skinless chicken breast halves, with ribs
  • 2 skinless chicken thighs, with bones
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt , plus 1 teaspoon
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus 1 teaspoon
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced
  • 3 ounces prosciutto, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup white wine
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 teaspoon fresh oregano leaves
  • 1/2 cup chicken stock
  • 2 tablespoons capers
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves

Directions

Season the chicken with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. In a heavy, large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. When the oil is hot, cook the chicken until browned on both sides. Remove from the pan and set aside.

Keeping the same pan over medium heat, add the peppers and prosciutto and cook until the peppers have browned and the prosciutto is crisp, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, wine, and herbs. Using a wooden spoon, scrape the browned bits off the bottom of the pan. Return the chicken to the pan, add the stock, and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until the chicken is cooked through, about 20 to 30 minutes.

If serving immediately, add the capers and the parsley. Stir to combine and serve. If making ahead of time, transfer the chicken and sauce to a storage container, cool, and refrigerate. The next day, reheat the chicken to a simmer over medium heat. Stir in the capers and the parsley and serve.
